For Gerald Kuipers, who will be a four-time U of A grad next June, lifelong learning has helped him find his footing, move up and stay current in a dynamic career. He took the Environmental Resource Management certificate and both the Occupational Health and Safety certificate and diploma.

Lisa Belanger
ALUP Student

Lisa lives in Wabasca, in Northern Alberta on the Bigstone Cree Nation Reserve, and works as lands administrator with the Municipal District of Opportunity. Previously from a health background, she chose the Applied Land Use Planning (ALUP) program to develop her skills in the planning and development department.

Sameh Elsayed
Environmental Studies Instructor

Sameh teaches Environmental Site Assessment as well as Management and Remediation Technologies, which are part of the Environmental Remediation Certificate. He has been teaching at Extension for 14 years and his background is in Civil and Environmental Engineering. ​

“I enjoy sharing the information, mentoring and coaching new graduates and providing guidance to professionals who would like to change careers and work in the field of managing contaminated sites.”

Greg Hodgson
OHS Instructor

Greg teaches Fundamentals of Occupational Hygiene, and will also be teaching the new Strategic Operations and Management in Spring 2021. He has worked in health and safety for over 12 years and has been teaching with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program at Extension for over 4 years.

“Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and expertise. They often have experiences that apply to the content of courses and that they can share with their classmates. I think this really helps to solidify the learning experience.”

Michael Brown
ALUP Instructor

 

Michael teaches Introduction to Municipal Economic Development within the ALUP program. His professional background includes 10 years in urban planning, and he has been consulting on community building, economic development, business development, fundraising, and development proforma support since 2017. Most of his life has been spent in core communities and for 15 years he has been dedicated to helping uplift families in poverty through workshops, education and volunteer aid.

“I’m inspired by students fighting for the future of their community and aim to inspire students likewise. I enjoy introducing students to the theory of economic development and sharing new practices that can inform their work.”

Awards and Funding Opportunities

Internal Funding Opportunities:

Occupational Health and Safety Healthy Workplace Award
Deadline: January 31, 2021

The award is restricted to current students of the University of Alberta in the following Faculty of Extension programs: Occupational Health and Safety Certificate and/or Professional Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. Current students are those who have not yet graduated at the time of submission.

Students must write a 1500 to 2000 word essay that identifies a psycho-social or mental-health concern in the workplace (i.e. burnout, compassion fatigue, stress, vicarious trauma, bullying), and demonstrates and discusses a strategic solution with details on how you would implement it.

William F. Lede and Ernest Newman Memorial Bursaries
Deadline: August 31, 2021


William F. Lede and Ernest Newman Memorial Bursaries are intended to assist the further education and career development of students and practicing municipal administrators who demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career in municipal government administration.

Two (2) bursaries to a maximum of $1,000 for William F. Lede and $800 for Ernest Newman may be awarded annually.

Eligibility: Students who are enrolled or preparing to enrol in the ALUP, NACLAA I, or NACLAA II programs. The applicants must be practicing Alberta municipal administrators employed by a rural or urban municipal authority.

Alumni Professional Development Grants

Alumni Professional Development Grants help University of Alberta alumni achieve their career growth goals by removing financial barriers to high-quality, meaningful career education and personal growth opportunities offered by the UAlberta and its partners.

Canada Training Benefit

The Canada Training Credit is a new refundable tax credit to help Canadians with the cost of training fees. Eligible workers—those who have at least $10,000 in earnings for work (including maternity or parental leave benefits) and income below about $150,000—between the ages of 25 and 64 are accumulating a credit balance at a rate of $250 per year (starting 2019), up to a lifetime training amount limit of $5,000. 

Canada-Alberta Job Grant

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is a training program where an employer applies on behalf of their employee(s) for eligible training costs. Employers decide who gets training and what type of training may be needed for their employees. Funding is provided by the Government of Canada.

Dick Martin Scholarship Award
Deadline: January 31, 2021

Awarded annually, this $3,000 national scholarship is available to any student enrolled, either full-time or part-time, in an occupational health and safety-related course or program leading to an occupational health and safety certificate, diploma, or degree at an accredited college or university in Canada. To apply for the award, post-secondary students are invited to submit a 1,000-1,200 word essay, cover letter, and completed online application form.

Apply for Graduation

If you will have completed your program requirements by March 31st, 2021 make sure to apply for graduation by February 1st, 2021. 

 

Check Program Path & Progression

If you’re not sure where you are in your program, you can go into Bear Tracks and view your Academic Advisement Report. If you have not yet applied for admission to your program, this tool will not be available to you. We encourage you to apply to your program as soon as possible if you have not already. Applying to your program is necessary in order to graduate.

How to view your Academic Advisement Report:

  1. Go to Bear Tracks and click on “Plan” in the left side bar.

  2. Then go to Academic Requirements and click on “View Report as PDF” (yellow button).

 

Plan Ahead and Register Now for Courses

Many of our courses fill up well in advance so we recommend you plan ahead for the courses you want to take and register as soon as possible to reserve your spot.
